Marlborough is New Zealand's largest and most successful wine producing area situated at the top of the South Island. It is renowned for the production of exuberantly fruity Sauvignon Blanc and intensely aromatic wines. The vineyard is one of the largest privately owned wine estates in Marlborough. It is planted in Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and has some of the oldest Chardonnay vines in Marlborough producing exceptional quality grapes and wines. Yields for the production of Isabel Estate wines are restricted by pruning to low bud numbers and, where necessary, shoot and bunch thinning to ensure that fruit quality is optimised. The vineyard is also planted to a higher vine density and has approximately twice the number of vines per hectare (4,400) than is usual in Marlborough. This allows for lower yields per vine, thereby giving the much sought after concentration and depth to wines that can only originate from lower yielding vineyards. Sustainable viticultural practices are used in the vineyard. A system of mulching and the use of organic fish based fertiliser maintains vineyard soil nutrition. Due to the dry nature of the Marlborough climate, vineyard sprays can be dept to a very low level. Irrigation is also kept to the minimum necessary - to ensure vine well-being - allowing full fruit ripening. Isabel Estate produces true single vineyard wines - from fruit grown in their own vineyard under their total viticultural control. "We aim to make inspired wines that are a strong expression of the individual style and character, as determined by the vineyard site and soil." Visit the Isabel website.

The palate, for a young Pinot Noir, is quite dense and full with flavours of spice and nutmeg, then a character of prosciutto ham ... more
